Robert J. Ballentine — Founder, Event Horizon

Robert founded Event Horizon in 2025 to commercialise three decades of work at the intersection of cognitive linguistics, structure and meaning, and perceptual realism.

His career has spanned consulting engagements across multiple sectors, including the UK's Royal Air Force, QinetiQ, Rolls-Royce, Virgin, Harris Communications, Nuffield Health, and Fortune 500 organisations. The thread across that work has been a consistent one — how meaning, structure, and form interact across domains, and what that reveals when applied to systems most people approach mathematically.

His foundational research collaborations include work with Dr. John Grinder, linguist and associate professor at UCLA, and Professor Allan Snyder of the University of Sydney's Centre for the Mind, on a research arc investigating savantism, higher-mind functioning, and cross-boundary cognitive applications.

Event Horizon represents the first commercial application of methodologies developed through that research arc — applied here specifically to the structural analysis of cryptographic code. The underlying methodology is the subject of pending UK and US patent protection.

Event Horizon is a one-person UK business, registered in Sandhurst, Berkshire — ten minutes from Farnborough's defence-research corridor and 25 minutes from Reading. The Sprint programme is open; the underlying research is the product of three decades of prior work.

The starting point

A different question to the one cryptography usually asks.

Most security systems start with mathematics. Event Horizon started with a question from linguistics and art: how does the human perceptual system actually resolve meaning, across language, music, and visual form?

The answer turns out not to be computation. It's structural recognition across multiple levels simultaneously. And it turns out to have a direct application to cryptographic code — because well-designed crypto algorithms have the same property. Their meaning is tightly bound to their structural shape. AES isn't AES unless its structure executes the AES recipe. ChaCha20 isn't ChaCha20 unless its quarter-round operations are in the precise sequence.

Different programmers writing the same algorithm produce wildly different first versions but nearly identical underlying shapes. That observation is what Event Horizon operationalises at machine speed for cryptographic code — classifying every file in a codebase by which crypto family it structurally matches, in seconds rather than weeks.

Cryptography wasn't the obvious destination for this work. It turned out to be the application where the method's commercial value is clearest, most measurable, and most urgent right now — particularly with the AI-driven exploit timeline that Anthropic's Mythos and Palo Alto Networks have made operationally real.

The Sprint programme
